Paid & Free Programs
 2012 has been a busy year, challenged with finding programs interesting enough for our public.  These four were the only paid programs ($400+ each) and the rest were through partnerships with the Health agencies, museums, local businesses, and the community.          


Peter Fletcher is very familiar with libraries and knows how to market himself.  I was quite impressed at how low maintenance this program was. 

Mr. Duffy Hudson was great in this monologue presentation of Edgar Allan Poe, however, the type of program appeared to be not all too familiar with the public.  Because it's a type of program requiring quite sitting and listening, it brought it quite a few of the mature folks who probably appreciate this type of entertainment more.  Not a full house, but certainly appreciated by the attending public.

Opera-Kadabra was marketed for Children's programs and was reported back to me by the children's librarian as a possible adult/family program.  I hired him and was well attended.













Free Programs
The rest of these programs are free, through a partnership allowing exposure and space for the entity providing the program.  The library advertises the library program and provides the space (community room with access to projector and screen, chairs, tables) with an understanding the entity cannot sell services, only provide the information.

A local director saw my "Host a movie @ the Library" poster and asked if he could show his short film that recently won some awards.  I took a look at it and found it appropriate (only 18 minutes) and he brought in a full house of his supporters and the community.  It was really a successful opportunity.  

 Well, the publishers of L. Ron Hubbard came in and wanted to sell their re-published books written by Hubbard.  They looked great, while making no judgment on public interest, I made it clear to them on how to market to libraries and they came up with this professional reader's theater.  Yes, it was professional and I think it would have been a great success, only that one of the actors who welcomed everyone was a little bit overly zealous in directing our attention to the life of L.Ron Hubbard, hence, only 5 attendees:(  I did take advantage of the buy one get one free offer on their books, and so I'll see where the public stands on that.

 Jackpot!  This program was packed.  The Jet Propulsion Lab does free programs and will not charge for travel if within 50 miles or so, and Tustin falls within.  Now, dealing with nerds, they like precision, and so everything had to be done with no surprises.  Program without a hitch.  Will definitely schedule them, if possible, on a quarterly basis.  Free.

 Jenny, the library page, introduced me to Voices of Tustin (a community choir) as an extra curricular activity.  Some serious singing for those who can sing every Tuesday evening at the local high school.  Well, I finally extended an invitation for them to come and sing at Tustin Library as a "practice" run for the real thing.  It was great, another pact house.  Hope they can make room to do it again or a few more times in 2013.  Free.

Love the organ and this musician is great!  However, I wish there were more in attendance.  Perhaps an annual music fest for local musicians?  Free. 

 Mr. Lennon was great.  He was a contact lent from HauntedOC.com.  An upcoming author with a background in ghost investigations.  I explained to him the deal with local authors at Tustin (they don't do well) and that he consider powerpoint and ghostly stories connected with his book.  HauntedOC did a fabulous set up in the room and the room was packed.  Great presentation and program.  Free, he could sell his books there.

Local author, several books published, asked if he could present this program and introduce his books.  Not too many, but enough for the author to be satisfied. 













Maralys Wills is a self promoting author and English professor.  She understands our community and the low interest in book talks, however, she somehow manages to bring in a small crowd as well as handling the sales of her book.











Craft Guild is back for its second season and so far, still working at getting a full house on these programs.  Ladies are great, Friends are great for providing a max of $200 per program for supplies which isn't fully used.  Our arsenal is building.

 K, This is a psychic group from Long Beach.  I thought to give it a try which began great, then later, patrons started reported some "selling" in the program.  Though I do not attend the programs, I do make sure we have an understanding on what goes on, so I had to discuss this feedback with the contact and simplify the library's expectations.  I thanked them for their service as they finished off the year.

Another company prospecting, however, relevant in the current economy.  Am scheduling her again under Credit repair in order to buy a house.

OMG!  Full class.  We post like a month before.  Apparently the newspaper posted it a few days before and we were inundated with phone calls.  A local resident walked in with his toddler to the library and asked if he could do a digital photography class during his dead time.  Ta daaa, great class, excellent presenter (has taught and owns growing photo company).

This one took some time to nail down.  I sent in a request to the local veterans group if they had any speakers available and they went me Mr. Ivan Bishop.  I spoke with him having more of a general topic and hoping to come up with a specific topic.  Finally, we came up with Sea Power.  As he was not familiar with technology, I worked with him.  It was very easy and I think he was impressed with his presentation.  He came dressed in his uniform and etiquette, welcomed everyone in from the front entrance.  It was great, fully supported by his friends and some in the community.

Free computer classes at the Library, offered by volunteers in the community.  What a way to do it!  Since we're short staffed, the community does step in just for a couple hours to share their talents and expertise.










After surfing the web for speaker guilds in Southern California, I found this and Tustin is a garden city.  They asked for a $100 honoraria, if possible, and were very easy to work with. 

  

Social Security has a bunch of topics for their speakers guild, however, it seems as of late, they're short on speakers perhaps because they've been laid off or something.  Anyways, they're not very popular, but topics are essential for the retiree and disabled.  It's one of those things you drag your feet to because you know it's important, and end up still procrastinating.

    

 

We had 2 UNA events because we gave them a free space to offer their programs.  They were very organized and the topics were very well presented.  The relationship program received rave reviews from patrons who attended.  The presenter just happened to see the poster inviting the public to present programs and she asked about it.  After vetting her, we found she had a Masters in counseling and was certified life coach.  The Science Talk happened to be a walk in.  A mother who was housing this professor wanted him to present somewhere and I negotiated with her the library terms.  It's interesting how much our Tustin public attends these scientific and educational events.




An assistant professor wanted to market her class and did a wonderful museum program while another was a return program which garnered pubic interest.  Our local Bowers Museum are always looking for opportunities to utilize their volunteer docent speakers.  Their topics are great, but presentation wise they need a little more excitement.  A few of them were really comfortable with public speaking, the topic, and use of technology.

*** 7/5/12 - I played around with the LIBX 2.0, adding a library extension.  Because it's still so new, they did not have ocpl.org, so I emailed it in.  A few days latter I received a confirmation email that they added our system to the extension.  As you can see below, I've looked up a title in amazon and the extension badge is to the right, showing OCPL's title availability. 

This is great for patron use if they're motivated on the techy side.  As for librarians, it's great if we find ourselves using Amazon to verify title / author names.  For this to be more useful, a list of local libraries (free membership) would be beneficial.  I wonder what it would look like if they added worldcat?

YAY!  This would be the 4th craft program out of 6 planned.  One opted out due to schedule difficulties.  I just want to say, this one is a fun one and I think everyone will enjoy it.  The challenging bit about Craft programs is simplying the craft enough so that everyone enjoys it.  For Tea Towel Expressions, instead of using 10 colors, use 5 primary colors, share brushes & paints.  It's getting easier.

As part of Educational Thursdays, I think this might interst the travelling public.  In fact, since I myself enjoy travelling, this would be a great adventure!

 Thank Goodness I posted this.  It's all over the computer lab windows and one big poster outside.  I must say, if you are ever going to post something up, make it big and put it practically in their walking path.  Love those rolling easles!

Drop Shipments

There's nothing more exciting than to receive brand new books from the book vendors.  Due to budgetary constraints, our administrative branch who handles the main orders are restructuring, shipped staff out to branches, in addition to re-routing the shipping routes to drop at branches rather than the processing center.  


When we were plush with cash, all materials were shipped to Bibliographic services which held the traditional functions of Evaluations with real evaluators, Acquisitions, and Cataloging.  There was a processing team who covered and labeled these items.  


So the new process, due to drastically reduced Bibliographic staff, is to drop shipment at the branches where branch staff will pick up the slack.  To alleviate labor, the system has contracted vendors to physically process materials and outsourced cataloging (I think our catalogers may add details to these records).  


This past year I've been preparing my library assistant to receive such drop shipments.  Our Friends of the Library group have been very good to us, allowing us to order materials we are not receiving.  Because we had evaluators, I did not have to read reviews.  Now that our main budget is next to nothing, I've had to seek good reads for the public.  I'd say I spend about $1500 a month for just the adult fiction as I'd rather aim for circulation with popular reads.

Sad Day

The past few days have been taxing on staff.  It started Friday, March 9 when the Tustin PD showed up 30 minutes before closing to secure the family bathroom in the lobby.  A crime of a sexual nature was reported, involving a 13 year old boy and a 23 year old male sex offender.


A few of the public have been in to express their outrage and because they do not understand that we are not the administrative branch, we can not immediately make changes to calm their outrage.  Another bad reaction from the public is their judgment at pointing their fingers to suspicious people like a group of homeless who appeared to be having lunch in the city plaza.  I wonder if they'll start pointing fingers at young latino males in the teen room.


This took us by surprise because the sex offender looked like a teenager, standing at 5'3".  This week sucks.

Administrative orders

Tustin Library has five (5) self check-out stations which account for 30% of our check-outs.  We've been told to aim for 80%.  Really.  Hmmm.  So this is our first strategy so far, 2 tickets/week.  After printing four (4) poster, we strategically plastered one underneath the circuation desk facing the line, the other underneath Information Desk facing the line, and the other two on the walls by the self Check-Out stations.  So far, folks have seen it and have been re-routing to the SCO stations.

2012 First Quarter Programs

The Apple Butler.  Love the way this guy created his own name.  We partnered with him for 3 weeks in January and he really wanted to pull information fromt he general population as part of research for his book.  The only downside was that our computer lab had PCs instead of Macs.  And frankly, more and more folks are buying apple products.  I wonder if there's a grant out there to furnish a library computer lab with MACs!

This is our 6th year of BookBite and the group is constant at 25 members.  They choose the books and use the round robin technique, which is appropriate for such a large and vocal group.  I thought this could be a self-managed group, however, the group is more comfortable with staff on hand to handle the ones who are unaware of the time when they are talking.  A note about self-managed programs - they're great for economic days like these.

 Chinese New Year Celebration is a big event for this library and 300 is a lot of people to handle with a bunch of volunteers to set up and monitor.  This is our second year and our Friends of the Tustin Library got on board to support by donating $1000 to the committee.  Partnering with the community is a lot of work and stress does take its toll if you are not flexible.

Our Craft Guild is going great!  One of the members pulled out and so I have 40 photo boxes stashed in storage which I'll use for something else.  The members are great and once a month frequency is perfect.  For next season, with a new committee, I'll need to find a strong leader so they could get this going and running on their own.

Love this presenter!  She is a pro and exudes excitement and clarity in her expertise.  The room was packed with all ages and we learned the skill, hands on.  Our partnership allows her to get some exposure, however, the real exposure she aims is at the schools where it's a little difficult.  On the other hand, great program from the public, especially for the elderly seeking ways to exercise their brain. 

 This program was arranged by the branch manager and is totally self-managed.  If the facilitator keeps going, I'm sure he'll get a good sized class. 

This one here is a tricky one.  I feel like I'm fishing and still waiting for the tug.  I've posted these up and sent a few emails out to the business community and have not yet received a response.  I decided to do this because a few businesses had asked for time and space at the library to do a few free programs.  Hmmm... 

 I think this one will be super fun.  Sounds super fun and April is coming just around the corner.  Guess I better get my travel pictures up.

Thank goodness someone has volunteered from the community to teach computer classes.  They don't have to be an expert, just hold basic knowledge of how to operate a computer. 

I wonder if I should put together an easy lesson plan so anyone can teach the concept.  Hmmmm...
